The media training workshop might last one day.
The preparation often takes me a month.
That’s because I don’t believe media training should feel generic.
Before I ever walk into the room, I’m studying the organization.
I’m looking for past interviews, print stories, podcasts, radio segments and video. I’m paying attention to the questions reporters have already asked, the language the organization naturally uses, the issues they’re most likely to be asked about, and the places where their messaging could get muddy under pressure.
Whenever I can, I use their actual language and real-world situations in the training itself.
Their mission.
Their programs.
Their audiences.
Their likely media questions.
Because it’s one thing to learn the concept of a Main Message.
It’s another to build one around something you might genuinely be asked about next week.
That’s where the training starts to become useful.
Participants learn how to craft clear Main Messages, support them with stories, statistics and sound bites, anticipate difficult questions, bridge without sounding evasive, and deliver their message with confidence and presence.
And then we practice.
Not once.
Repeatedly.
In partner shares.
In mock interviews.
On camera.
With feedback.
With another round to try it again.
Because confidence doesn’t come from understanding a framework.
It comes from reps.
It comes from hearing yourself say the words out loud, noticing where you rush or over-explain, learning how to recover when a question catches you off guard, and building enough muscle memory that the skill is there when the pressure goes up.
I’ve done this work with small nonprofits, large organizations, government teams and high-visibility leaders.
The size of the organization changes.
The preparation doesn’t.
I want people to walk away knowing what they want to say, how they want to say it, and trusting themselves enough to stay steady when it matters.
If your organization has leaders who might be called on to speak to the media - or you want your team better prepared before that moment arrives - this is exactly the kind of work I help clients do.
